Who are your cultural champions in Reading?

To celebrate its first birthday, a Reading-based online magazine is looking to find the best in Reading’s cultural life. Alt Reading launched its search on the very day that it turned one, Tuesday, January 27.

Alt Reading’s awards also features notable Reading figures as guest judges for the categories, which include New Independent Business of the Year, Independent Business of the Year, Event of the Year, Venue of the Year and Individual Contribution.

Members of the public are able to nominate individuals, events and organisations they think have added to Reading’s cultural soul in the past year. Nominations are open until Sunday, February 15, when they will then be collated into a shortlist which members of the Reading public can then vote on.

Guest judges include Reading Fringe Festival’s Zsuzsi Lindsay; Adam, Jacobs, who runs Jacobs the Jewellers and chairs Reading BID, and the Mayor of Reading, Cllr Tony Jones.

Alt Reading, which began in January 2014, is an online magazine focusing on Reading’s cultural side. For the past year the website has been publishing daily articles on art, theatre, music, comedy, history and independent businesses in Reading. It is staffed by volunteers and was, last year, nominated for the Pride of Reading Awards.

Speaking about launching the awards, Alt Reading founder and editor Niall Norbury said: “We’re really excited to be launching these awards to celebrate our first year as Alt Reading. The past year has seen plenty of businesses, artists and events spring up across Reading and we thought the awards would be the best way to celebrate Reading’s cultural community.”

Guest judge and Reading Fringe  Festival supremo Zsuzsi Lindsay said: “When I was asked to be a judge for Alt Reading there was absolutely no question in my mind – they have supported the arts scene so much over the last year and had such a huge impact that there isn’t much that I wouldn’t do for them!”

The awards are the first of several projects Alt Reading hopes to launch in addition to their online publication in 2015.

  • New Independent Business of the Year – Guest judge: Adam Jacobs (Jacobs the Jewellers & Reading BID)
